CYPRUS

For a country whose proud history dates back 10, 000 years, Cyprus hardly shows its age. Its golden beaches, verdant mountains and even the culture in its towns and cities have remained so refreshing and very much alive, attracting tourists from all over the world. Perhaps only its ancient World Heritage Sites, such as Venetian walls, Crusader castles and ancient Roman mosaics, are the only giveaway that this forever young country is actually wise beyond its years.

Limassol

Overlooked by the tranquil Troodos Mountains, the town of Limassol has changed much since Richard the Lionheart first put this lively resort on the map in 1191. Bars and street cafes surround the bustling port; shopaholics can delight in designer boutiques and fascinating bazaars, while sun-worshippers can enjoy stretching out on some of the island’s best beaches.

Limassol, on the south coast of Cyprus, is the island's largest resort. The city stretches along the coast, sheltered by the Troodos Mountains, whose foothills are home to the grape vines used to make the area's famous wines.

Attractions

  • Kolossi Castle, medieval home to the mysterious order of the Knights Templar.
  • The Cyprus Wine Festival during the first week of September. One of Limassol's biggest festivals, it features live music and dance, as well as free tastings of the finest local wines.
  • Limassol’s remarkable medieval castle, built around 1000 A.D. by the Byzantines. Today, the castle serves as a medieval museum, with an excellent collection of artifacts (weapons such as cannons and armor, and everyday items like coins, metalware, pottery and glass, and even artwork, including paintings and statues) dating from 400 to 1870 A.D.
